Northern Lights Alcohol Inking Tutorial

Supplies:

Stamp: Time Of Giving

Card Stock: Basic White and Vellum

Ink: Fresh Freesia

Dies: Giving Gifts

Accessories: Stampin’ Blends; Fresh Freesia Dark, Misty Moonlight Dark and Night Of Navy Light and Wink of Stella

Embossing Folder: Snowflakes

Miscellaneous: Rubbing Alcohol 99%

Directions:

Cut a card base of Basic White to 4 1/4” x 11” and score at 5 1/2”. 

Cut another piece of Basic White C/S to 4” x 5 1/4”. 

Die cut the Giving Gifts Santa Die near the top/center of the Basic White panel. When you die cut out the Santa and Sleigh it creates your rectangle window opening for the Vellum to show through.

 

Then emboss this panel with a Snowflake Embossing Folder (or a star or any Christmas embossing folder) Die cut another Santa and sleigh to glue/layer overtop of the embossed Santa and sleigh. This will add some strength and also not be embossed. 

Cut a piece of Vellum to 3 3/4” x 4”. Using Stampin’ Blends, scribble and add colour all over the Vellum. 

Using 99% rubbing alcohol, dip a small paint brush into the alcohol and dab over the scribbled lines. You just want the colours to bleed and soften the harsh marker lines. If you get some puddling, use a tissue to dab the excess off. Once dry, splatter with some rubbing alcohol to create some spots. Let dry again and splatter with Wink Of Stella. 

Cut a strip of this Vellum panel off to layer under the sentiment strip.

Attach the remainder of the Vellum to the card base using adhesive in the 4 corners. You want the Vellum panel to be behind the die cut. Attach the Basic White die cut panel to the card base and over top the Vellum, using Dimensionals. 

Stamp a sentiment on a Basic White C/S strip using Fresh Freesia Ink. Attach to a strip of the left over Vellum that is slightly larger. Attach to the card front using Dimensionals. 

Add some Rhinestones to finish the card off.

For todays card I started with a Calypso Coral card base 8 1/2" x 5 1/2 and scored at 4 1/4".

I added a Basic Black C/S layer measuring 4" x 5 1/4".

Cut a piece of Vellum Card Stock to 3 7/8" x 5 1/8". Also cut a piece of Basic White C/S of the same size, this will go behind the Vellum to amplify the colours of the alcohol inks on the Vellum.

I used 3 different Stampin' Blends to create this card: Dark Calypso Coral, Dark Pale Papaya and Dark Daffodil Delight.

Alcohol Blending Technique Instructions

I did the alcohol blending all over the Vellum C/S. After I was happy with the blending and the colours, I splattered some alcohol onto the Vellum. It makes little circle blotches. I also splattered some Wink Of Stella over the Vellum. When this layer is dry, use Stampin' Seal to attach the Vellum to the same sized Basic White C/S layer. I find that the Stampin' Seal doesn't show through the Vellum. Attach this layer to the card front.

Using Basic Black C/S punch out 3 flowers, 1 large and 2 small from the Flowers And Leaves Punch. I crumpled up the flowers then flattened them out again. Using Dimensionals, attach the flowers together. I also punched out a small circle of Daffodil Delight C/S and added it to the flower center. I used Wink Of Stella on the flower center. Attach the flower to the card front with a few Glue Dots.

Punch out 2 leaves using the Pattern Party Designer Series Paper and the Flowers And Leaves Punch. Tuck and glue under the flower.

Stamp a sentiment in Memento Black Ink using the Quiet Meadow Stamp Set. Angle cut both ends. Attach the sentiment  to the card front using Dimensionals.

Thinking Of You

For todays card I started with a 4" x 8" piece of Soft Succulent Card Stock scored in half at 4". This is the card base.

Cut a piece of Vellum to 2 1/2" x 2 1/2". For this sample I used 2 Stampin' Blends, Dark Evening Evergreen and Dark Soft Succulent. I scribbled horizontal lines back and forth alternating between the 2 Stampin' Blends. My lines were about 1/2" wide, repeating until I reached the bottom. Then I dipped a small paint brush into the "99% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol" and dabbed it over the lines between the 2 colours to blend them together. I used a fair amount of the rubbing alcohol. Once I was happy with the blending, I dipped my paint brush into the alcohol again and using my Bone Folder I tapped the brush to splatter the alcohol onto the Vellum and it creates these really cool blotchy circles! Then I splattered it with the Wink Of Stella for some sparkle! Set aside to dry.

Cut a piece of Basic White C/S the same size as the Vellum, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2". I find that by adding this white C/S behind the Vellum the colours are more vibrant. I used Stampin' Seal to attach these two pieces together.

Cut a piece of Pattern Party Designer Series Paper to 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" and attach the Vellum panel to it. Attach this to the card front using Dimensionals.

Using a scrap of Soft Succulent C/S, stamp a sentiment with Memento Black Ink. Angle cut both ends. Attach to the card front using Dimensionals.

Die cut a Basic Black C/S leaf using the Artistic Dies. Cut apart, I used 3 leaves. Add some Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue to the leaves and tuck underneath the sentiment.

Tie a double bow using Basic Black Bakers Twine and attach under the sentiment using a Glue Dot.
